Low impact exercise has grown in popularity with the aging baby boomer generation and with increasing concerns over joint health. Low impact exercise can range from yoga to elliptical-trainers to swimming.

So what is low impact? First, we’ll explain high impact and low impact will make more sense. High impact workouts involve activities such as running or leaping, like jumping rope. It is anything where, at any time, at least one foot is not in contact with the ground. Therefore, low impact is when one foot is always in contact with the ground. This includes walking and rollerblading.

Benefits of low impact exercise include:

  • Improved flexibility
  • Decreased pain during workouts
  • Easier on the joints
  • Increased strength

Some exercises such as swimming and cycling, are considered no impact exercises. This term isn’t as common as low impact, so these exercises are often grouped in with the low impact exercise category.
